What would you say to someone who’s considering starting their own private law firm?
I would say it’s a lot of fun because you’re creating, you’re building something. But you have to know yourself. Some people don’t mind working in the unknown, having faith, and building something, and knowing it would work. That’s what entrepreneurs do.
Yeah.
You don’t know where your next client is coming from. I remember back in the days, how people would be like “God told me to choose you.” I’ll just be looking like <chuckles>. And your next client is your next paycheck.
Right.
But you’re going to go into an unknown space, uncertain space, build and hope for the best knowing it will work. That kind of confidence. There are people like that. I fall under that category. Then there are other people who are like, “I need to see a steady paycheck. I’m a logical person. One plus one equals two. Everything has to make sense. I cannot move in chaos! You cannot be that kind of person and start a business! You will quit at some point because there are many times, ah, there were some months, Solape, the phone did not even ring! Hey! I’d be like “What in the world?!” I’d start praying, “Lord! Kilode?! What’s happening?” Can you imagine?! I remember that! It’s been a while. But you’re going to keep showing up! Keep working! Keep knowing that it will work. So my advice to anybody who wants to start a law firm or any business is it is a lot of fun. It is for those who love to create, build, all that, but it is filled with uncertainty and no guarantees. And you have to be okay with that! And just keep showing up. If you can do that, then have at it. If you need a security blanket…a safety net, then, you might want to do a 9 to 5. Not one is better than the other. You just have to know which one, like what kind of risk…I think it’s a lot of fun. I love it! I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. It has afforded me a lifestyle that I don’t think I’ll have had. I can take off when I want to take off…hang out with my kids when I want to. I can make my time work for me.
